US Green Card Application Process
Each year, 50,000 permanent green cards are issued by the United States government through the Green Card Lottery.
Will to win a Green Card Lottery is being randomly selected. The selection is a computer-generated drawing against winners the authorization to permanently work and live the United States.
The program is also known as Diversity Visa Lottery Program, or DV. Basically, it gives potential immigrants an opportunity to have legal status in America, where they would otherwise not. The program is implemented every year.
The DV was established in 1990 with the Immigration Act, allowing for 55,000 immigrant visas to be issued in an annual lottery which was to start in 1995. It is an effort by the United States government to help diversify the immigration population, especially in countries where, in the previous five years, there were very low rates of immigration to the US.
The number of DV immigrant visas was reduced by 5,000 in 1999 in order to provide this amount to the NACARA program.
How Does the Green Card Lottery Work?
This is an official program but has a very simple eligibility requirements. Although they are simple, they are also very strict requirements. Anyone in the world can apply to the program, as long as they can fulfill two basic entry requirements. They are distributed to the six geographic regions, only that a greater number of them go to those regions where there is lower rates of immigration. Furthermore, if there are over 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years from one country, no visas will be issued to individuals of that country. Moreover, the maximum amount of Diversity Visas issued cannot exceed seven percent in any given country in one year.
The Official DV Lottery and Green Card Lottery Program
The Immigrant Diversity Visa Lottery was established as a means to give opportunity to people from countries to work, study, and live in the United States of America. It was meant to help create another source of immigration to diversify the American population.
